Aloha!
The Maui Nui Marine Resource Council (mauireefs.org) is a Hawaii-based nonprofit focused on coral reef conservation around the islands of Maui, Lanai, Molokai, and Kahoolawe (aka Maui Nui). Over the past several years, we have grown our ability to monitor environmental conditions to support conservation efforts along the south and west coasts of Maui thanks to Aqualink environmental buoy program. The Bristlemouth Pioneer program will now allow us to grow this effort in partnership with Kaheu.org, another local nonprofit that is working to restore watershed function and bring back the degraded coral reefs along Waiehu on Maui’s east coast.
The bay’s coral reefs are influenced by a combination of sea temperature, wave action, groundwater, and the water and sediment from intermittent streams inside the bay and the major Iao Stream to the south. We are in the process of deploying instrumentation that helps us understand the influence of these different factors, which will then help guide restoration interventions and the relative success of those actions in improving coral reef systems. We look forward to the Bristlemouth Program supporting our efforts to collect a higher density of environmental data than would ever have been possible for our team before.
