Please join us in congratulating @kdavis of Stanford University. We look forward to learning more about your project.
Thank so much! Very excited to use the Bristlemouth Development platform to integrate sensors that can inform environmental conditions (light, nutrient concentrations, chlorophyll-a, oxygen, flow, waves, pH, other carbonate system params) in real time on kelp farms to help predict growth and to estimate carbon fluxes from seaweed farms. We have an experiment planned this summer on the Ocean Rainforest farm offshore of Santa Barbara, CA!
Welcome! I think there are a few other folks working on / in seaweed farming. And there are a ton working on MCDR/carbon sensing. I’ll see if we can’t get folks connected.

I’m glad to know that there are more of us.
We are also engaged in the production of algae and we are exploring the possibility of using sensors that measure the growth parameters of microalgae and changes in the parameters of sea water. There is one difference: we grow microalgae, but I think our experience will be useful for increasing the productivity of macroalgae.
I’d be interested in knowing what the status of some of these projects are. Seems very interesting and relevant for monitoring and modeling kelp growth!
Latest update! We had a productive summer on the farm! We worked closely with Ocean Rainforest, Inc, who are growing giant kelp offshore of Santa Barbara, CA. As part of this partnership we are developing tailored monitoring platform specifically for seaweed farms, integrated with a validated seaweed growth model (MACMODS). This system delivers scientific-quality, real-time data streams and predictive modeling outputs, empowering farmers to optimize operations, automate processes, and improve yield based on current and projected environmental conditions. Right now we are talking to lots of seaweed farmers and regulatory agencies to find out which parameters and configurations are most important for their operations or regulatory monitoring. So, if you know a seaweed farmer, send them our way! @challett is planning to give a talk about our project at the upcoming 2025 BristleCon!
