Dev Kit losing power from buoy after 1 minute of being connected

Hi!

We have an issue with 2 of our newer spotters. I noticed this before, but did not think anything of it. When the spotter is powering the dev kit, the dev kit will shut itself off in about a minute or 2 of being powered on. I thought this was a fluke so after I finished programming the spotter I ran an instrument test and we are not recieveing any instrument data over cellular. After watching the instrument take its last sample I saw that the bristlemouth clicked off before the message was read. The spotter is set to have the bristlemouth stay on for 10 minutes.

Any ideas on what this is and how I can fix it? This did not happen with our older two spotters.

Understanding how the power controller works may help you debug this. Give this a read and post here if anything fixes it or if you are still experiencing issues.

I did this:

bridge cfg set 0 s u bridgePowerControllerEnabled 0
bridge cfg commit 0 s

and it worked and we could read pH through the buoy and over cellular, but when I tried to reset it to its field settings which will be:

bm cfg set 0 s u bridgePowerControllerEnabled 1
bm cfg set 0 s u sampleIntervalMs 3600000
bm cfg set 0 s u sampleDurationMs 600000
bm cfg set 0 s u samplesPerReport 1
bm cfg commit 0 s

The dev kit shut itself off 2 minutes after it turns on and is not on for long enough to capture the recording and send it. This scheme worked for our Cheeca buoy not sure why this one is not working.

Have you left it outside with a clear view of the sky for a couple hours? There will be a 2-minute initialization period, and then the bus will power down until after it gets a good GPS signal to learn the time and start aligning samples to UTC.

I have not put this buoy outside yet it has only been testing in my office do you recommend doing that?

For those field settings with the bridge power sampler enabled, yes, you’ll get a more reliable test that way.

Okay so leave outside for a few hours with the field sampling scheme and see if we get a pH after a few hours have passed?

I have left it outside for about 3 hours and we still do not see any pH readings. We are getting temperature and wave data.

I still see the dev kit turn on at the hour mark and shut off after 2 minutes. Any other troubleshooting ideas for this?

Really sorry to hear that. Please share the logs from the SD card. Especially helpful are BRIDGE_CFG, BRIDGE_SYS, BRIDGE, CFG, SYS, ERR, SENS_IND, and SENS_AGG.

@Taylor.gill - by chance, were these Spotters originally purchased with temperature sensors, and not Bristlemouth Development Kits attached?

If so, I suspect they may have a ‘subsampling’ feature enabled that would account for this (currently this feature is not documented in the Bristlemouth docs, so you wouldn’t know to look for it). The log files can tell us definitively if this is the case.

Yes! The 2 new spotters (the ones having this error) came with the temp probe attached. The dev kit was not attached I did that later on.

@Taylor.gill yep, that’s the problem:

“subsampleEnabled”: 1,

Sub-sampling is another layer of power cycle controlling, which is useful for some really power-constrained applications. It works just like sampling with a ‘duration’ and ‘interval’, but it’s applied on top of the sampling ‘ON’ periods.

So you can set subsampleEnabled to 0 using the same process you use to set any of the other sampling configurations.

(Sorry about that - we’ll add a note to our Getting Started docs to make sure sub-sampling is disabled, and next on our guides list is a detailed guide on Spotter’s Bristlemouth features – including all the sampling controls).

@Taylor.gill - it looks like the commit command got truncated / didn’t take.

It should be:

bm cfg set 0 s u subsampleEnabled 0

then

bm cfg commit 0 s

The commit will trigger the Bridge processor to reboot with some corresponding log output, after which you can verify the configs are set as desired with:

bm cfg status 0 s
