Is it possible to program the Spotter software remotely or must one be in physical contact. with the Spotter.

Yes, it is possible to update the firmware remotely, at least for more recent models of the Spotter buoy. This is usually referred to as an “over-the-air” or OTA update. It only makes sense over cellular, not satellite, where the cost of the data transfer would be a thousand dollars or more.
You can find the documentation from sofarocean.com → click support → click firmware updates → click “Updating your Spotter’s firmware version” → click “Over-the-air (OTA)”.
In the future we plan to enable customers to initiate the updates themselves. Currently the process involves a conversation with support.
PS — Also on the future roadmap is the ability to update Bristlemouth nodes OTA. Not yet though!
