NOV 4 - NOAA Fisheries Citizen Science Funding Opportunity

Calling all citizen scientists! Do you work with students and/or community members? Are you working on a Bristlemouth project that could be used to monitor fishery and/or ecosystem health?
For example…

  • integrating a receiver to track acoustically tagged fish?
  • integrating a camera to take underwater photos?
  • measuring water quality and other indicators of ecosystem health?

… If so, you can apply for funding from NOAA of $75,000 to $200,000 per project over a two-year period!

The full announcement is here: Lock

From the announcement:
The principal objective of this funding announcement is to support citizen science projects that can help inform federal fishery stock assessments and climate-ready fisheries management. Funding will prioritize projects that: provide information for use in stock assessments and increase understanding of current and/or future impacts of climate change on fish stocks and/or fishing communities.

Hi, we have been working on methods of improving the marine ecosystem for several years now and if you need our help, please contact us. As for financing, it may not work out since we are in Portugal.

Thanks @MarineCarbonFarm ! The funding is for US-based organizations but thanks for the post!

Hi tosca,

I’m kind of late to this game so I don’t know if the discussion still applies. Don’t know how I missed your message when you posted it, but I just saw it now and thought I’d reply.

Elmhurst University’s physics department implementing a mechatronics program, and one of the projects that we are working on within that program is related to robotics in undersea rovers. Essentially, we’re exploring the potential for building inexpensive rover systems that can do underwater mapping and sensing (in our case in the Great Lakes). Our project includes both sensors as well as control systems for navigation and the like. We have not yet been fortunate enough to qualify for a Bristlemouth developers kit because we’ve been working primarily on the control systems, which is not their focus at this point, but hope springs eternal.

As a small university, we don’t have the resources that many larger schools might have, and so any additional sources of funding would be of interest to us. I haven’t been involved in requesting grants at this point, so what guidance might you be able to provide in that regard?

Thanks and have a great day.

Ron

Hi @Rongee - great to meet you! Thanks for the context. The specific funding opportunity that I had posted already closed, but keep your eye on this topic page in case new opportunities open up.

Thanks, Tosca. I’ll do that. Have a great day. Ron
